Gallery of Lubki

According to Baldina, "The art of the lubok is hard to explain in words - the images must be seen" (p. 9). Thus, for the viewer's edification, a short collection of lubki:

"The heavenly bird Alkonos." She sings the praises of the Lord.

"The Twelve Good Friends." Twelve virtues, including prayer, humility, truthfulness and restraint, are our stalwart allies.

The bear and the goat decide not to fight, but instead to enjoy each other's company and make music.

fomerpa.jpg

A picture we reviewed in class, depicting a short story of the mishaps of two brothers. In class lubok fashion, it portrays everything that occurs in the story in a single shot, as though it is all occurring simultaneously and time does not exist.

Alexander Boguslawski operates a huge collection of lubki, with translations and explanations (and from which most images on this site were borrowed) is available here.

Another archive, mostly of religious-themed lubki, from the collection of the State Art Museum.
